Bowling Injuries and How to Avoid Them

Bowling or 10 pin bowling is a sport but more appropriately considered as a leisure activity. However, it is one of the major kinds of throwing sport. The game involves a ball, which can be of different size and weight, depending upon the convenience of the person playing with it. The pin balls acts as the target, which are place at a distance from the throwing point.

Bowling is played wearing the bowling shoes. Bowling shoes are normally made up of rubber, which makes them easy to brake the slide of the player when he is about to throw the bowling ball. The floor surface of the bowling arena is made slipper for the ball to slide through it easily. However, this slippery surface becomes hard for the players to maintain their balance; this is the reason that the bowling player wears specially design bowling shoes. According to many studies and shoes tests, slippery surface becomes hard for the players to maintain their balance; this is the reason that the bowling player wears specially designed bowling shoes.

Though bowling is a leisure activity and mostly played for fun by people of different age groups and abilities, the game involves potential injuries to the people playing it. The player is prone to many different kind of injuries, which can be turned chronic, in case it is not cured on time.

However, by taking simple precautions and preventions techniques, it is very easy to avoid or minimize the bowling injuries to a certain extent.

Common Bowling Injuries and its Prevention:

1. Thumb Sprains:

Thumb sprains are one of the most common injuries related to bowling. By the excessive use of the fingers gripping the ball can result in the thumb to pain and get swelled over the base of the joint. The pain becomes more during the movement of the joint.

Prevention: The thumb sprains can be simply prevented by regularly changing the finger on which most of the weight of the ball is exerted. In case of increase pain, any painkiller ointment can be applied few times on rub gently against the finger joint.

2. Biceps Tendinopathy:

Bicep Tendinopathy includes multiple injuries which can happen in the bicep tendons. Repeatedly lifting and throwing of the heavy ball can lead the muscles in the bicep area to get stretched, resulting in severe pain around the area.

Prevention: The bicep Tendinopathy can be prevented by regularly changing the weight of the ball for playing. Moreover, if the strain on the biceps does not seems to be reducing, it is advisable to change the bowling arm or stop playing until the muscles are completely relaxed.

3. Shoulder Injuries:

Just like the biceps, shoulders also go through repeated movement while playing bowling. The weight of the ball and the throwing motion exerts pressure and weight on the shoulders of the bowler. Due to several abduction, posterior flexion and external rotation, a severe strain can be developed in the upper body of the player.

Prevention: Shoulder strain can be avoided by maintaining appropriate body posture during the lifting and ball throwing time.

4. Knee Ligament injuries:

An abrupt change in the direction of the knee while releasing the ball near the throwing area can result in the knee ligament to tear off.

Prevention: Appropriate bowling shoes should be always worn while playing as they prevent the bowler to slip on the slipper surface.
